picSince 1991, J.A. Norris has been involved in some aspect of the art world. Watercolor, pastel, photography and pottery, led a natural progression toward a more intense hands-on type of art form, wearable art. Jewelry!

“I noticed at different events that featured an array of art and jewelry, that people gravitated toward the artists who showcased different types of jewelry. Among the hand woven scarves, hats and other adornment, jewelry seemed to have the biggest draw. It’s difficult to pass by jewelry whether man or woman, old and young without taking at the very least, a quick look”, says southern-based designer.

“Jewelry speaks volumes! For centuries, men have presented their loved ones with gifts of jewels. Women buy for themselves and other women simply because most people like to adorn themselves. The gift of jewelry means you’ve taken the time to pick out a special design for a special person”.

Born in South Carolina, Norris attributes his love for art and jewelry to his parents. “As a military family, we had the opportunity of a lifetime to live and travel in this country and Europe. My parents made certain that we saw everything from the Hope Diamond at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. to castles and museums which housed some of the most incredible works of art and jewelry. Even as a young person, you can’t help but be influenced by the incredibly beautiful things you see throughout different cultures. Without even realizing it, my parents blessed me with that vision. I will always be grateful to them for sharing the beauty of the world”.

The designer has been based in Columbia, South Carolina since 1978. As a self-taught jewelry maker, he started creating and selling necklaces and earrings from some nearly discarded jewelry given to him by his mother, friends and familiy. Later, he used pieces found in antique stores that could be used as parts, pieces and a center of interest.

Over the years, things have progressed quite a bit and although the materials and styles have evolved to the more Elegant, Traditional and Classic (hence the company name ETC…designs), the elements of art have always been there.

“I think jewelry creating is a fine art. You have color, shape, texture and movement in the work you do. If any of those elements are missing, the jewelry can be very unexciting. I think the wearer should be noticed for her adornment but, not overshadowed by it”.

Using semi-precious stones, fresh water pearls, crystals, and a variety of new and vintage beads of glass and stone, along with sterling silver and gold-filled wire and chain, the jewelry of designer J.A. Norris is one-of-a-kind and made for women who want something special, affordable and that will last beyond one fashion season. Something they can wear and enjoy for years to come.
